Neck 23: Sore Throat Title hidden

Presentation

Patient presents with sore throat x 2 weeks, not improving. On physical exam, the tonsils appear enlarged.


Clinical differential diagnosis

Concern for tonsillitis. Peritonsillar Abscess?


Findings

Neck CT: There are enlarged bilateral palatine tonsils. They have a characteristic striated appearance. There is surrounding edema extending laterally into the parapharyngeal space, which appears worse on the left. There is no evidence of a tonsillar or peritonsillar abscess.


Treatment

14 day course of antibiotics to cover Strep, Staph and Anaerobes.

Diagnosis

Tonsillitis without complication.
